Flying a drone is not something that anyone can do

The application of Regulation 2019/947 of the European Commission has meant changes for all those who handle this type of gadget, whether they carry out recreational or professional activities, as well as model airplanes. The first requirement to take into account before launching an unmanned aerial vehicle is to register as an operator at the AESA electronic headquarters and obtain the registration number that must appear visibly on the drone.

The next step is to accredit a minimum knowledge as a pilot. For those who do it in the 'open' category, the one with the least risk and with no other aspiration than taking pictures with friends, it will be enough to access the Agency's website. The training there is online and free, and after passing the 'online' exam, AESA will issue you a certificate. It is also mandatory to take out a policy that covers civil liability against third parties for damages that may arise during the flights, also when they are of a recreational nature.

Regarding the flight rules, these are subject to the weight of the drone, the presence of other people and the proximity to buildings. They may not exceed 120 meters in height or 50 horizontally; nor enter prohibited areas, such as airports, military installations or natural parks (all are listed on the Enaire Drones page); and must always respect the privacy of people.

Up to 249 grams

Flying a drone is not something I can do anyone

In the case of aircraft with a maximum takeoff mass of less than 250 grams –the simplest ones– "they do not require any operational authorization or a declaration by the operator prior to the flight." Those who exceed that weight or have sensors capable of capturing personal data must register electronically with AESA and even obtain an authorization if they fall into the 'specific' (risk) category.

Since December 31, the requirements are based on the risk of the operation and not on whether it is a drone for recreational or professional use, which significantly reduces the administrative obstacles faced by those who fly a drone running drone.
